The existing cordial relationship between the Ilaro-Yewa Community and the Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro was given a boost on Sunday as Obas, Chiefs and elites of the community converged on the Asade Agunloye Ultra-Modern Pavilion for a reception in honour of the Polytechnic
Council Members and Principal Officers.
In his address at the event, the Olu of Ilaro and Paramount
Ruler of Yewaland, HRM Oba (Dr) Kehinde Gbadewole Olugbenle, said he initiated
the special event as a means of expressing the appreciation of the Obas and
people of Ilaro in particular, and Yewaland in general, to the Polytechnic
Council and Management for their high level performance and conscious promotion
of a mutually beneficial relationship with their host community.
He said the Governing Council under the Chairman, Dr Mrs
Veronica Ogbuagu and the Management under the Rector, Dr Olusegun Aluko have
both impressed him and the community with their exemplary performance and high
level cooperation which have promoted harmonious relationship and a robust
partnership from which the Polytechnic and the Community have benefitted.
Oba Olugbenle said since he was installed as the Olu, he has
encouraged more Yewa elites and philanthropists to become more interested in
donating infrastructures and promoting academic and entrepreneurial skill
development in the institution.
“I am optimistic that this trend of top-notch collaboration
will increase now that an indigene of the community has emerged as the Rector
of the Polytechnic, a development which makes it the first time in the history
of the institution”, the monarch remarked.
Responding, Chairman of the Polytechnic Governing Council,
Dr Mrs Veronica Ogbuagu said the members of the Council were very happy that
Oba Olugbenle and the people of the community were doing so much to promote a
vibrant gown and town relationship, adding that the Council will not take the
gesture of the community for granted, but rather see it as an impetus to
deliver more quality service and sustain the existing productive relationship between
the Polytechnic and the Yewa community.
She said the Council recommended Dr Mikhail Akinde as the
new Rector after due diligence and conviction that his performance and track record
qualified him as being the most suitable for the top job.
The immediate past Rector of the Polytechnic, Architect Dr
Olusegun Aluko, thanked Oba Olugbenle and the people of Yewaland for their
support and cooperation which had led to the success and achievements recorded
during his eight years two-term tenure.
“It is on record that the Ilaro Community, especially
landlords, did not request for fresh payment of rent from our students due to
closure of the institution during the COVID-19 lockdown”, Aluko said, noting
that this type of kindness and selfless gesture was exemplary and should be
emulated by every community where educational institutions are located.
In his address, the new Rector, Dr Akinde thanked Oba
Olugbenle, the Council Members and all those who stood by him during the
