OGUN WEST'S TRUST IN YAYI'S REPRESENTATION IN THE 10TH SENATE: A PIECE WRITTEN BY KEHINDE AKINLADE
The rising of the sun on June 13th 2023, will herald another day in the calendar of the year 2023. In Ogun West Senatorial District of Ogun State and even the larger Nigeria nation, the nation's political landscape in particular, by the sunset of the day, June 13 would go down as a historical day of a very political significance.
The 10th National Assembly of the Federal Republic of Nigeria will be inaugurated on the day, an event of historical importance to the nation Nigeria and more important than that, Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola Yayi would officially be inaugurated into the National Assembly as Senator representing Ogun West making it the first time ever in the political history of Nigeria that a senator would represent two different senatorial districts of two different states, Lagos and Ogun States.
Until June 13th 2023, Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola Yayi was the Senator representing Lagos West in the National Assembly. He held the mandate of the good people of Lagos West for two terms as Senator. His brilliant performances on the floor of the Senate Chamber, his deliveries of democratic dividends to Lagos West constituents that were regular, impactful, developmental, growth engendering, highly uplifting were reasons the people of Ogun West Senatorial District, his senatorial district of origin in Ogun State made passionate plea to him to come and use his wealth of experience not only to change the face of politics in the senatorial district but also for the politically marginalized people of Ogun West to enjoy dividends of democracy the way they have seen afar, the people of Lagos West profiting in terms of human capital and infrastructural development from the back to back mandates they gave to Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola Yayi.
Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola Yayi is not new to history making. He remains one of the privileged few in the nation that transited from state Assembly to the House of Representatives and from there to the red chamber of the National Assembly. Senator Adeola achieved this with back to back victories at the poll. Six victories, losing none. He won elections into the Lagos State House of Assembly twice, one time into the green chamber of the House of Representatives and thrice now into the red chamber of the Senate.
The history maker, Yayi's emergence at the poll as the Senator to represent Ogun West in the 10th National Assembly is the first time an experienced lawmaker is returning into the Senate chamber as a representative of the good people of Ogun West. Before the coming of Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola Yayi into Ogun West politics, the senatorial district has been presenting freshers as Senators. In the 10th National Assembly, Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola Yayi is coming in as a ranking Senator with wealth of experience as a lawmaker not only as three times member of the Nigeria Senate but also as a former two terms state legislator and one term member of the House of Representatives.
The voting in of freshers by Ogun West electorates in the past has not helped the district to maximize democratic gains accruing from the National Assembly. Ogun West needs a lot catching up to do in terms of infrastructural and human capital development. Unfortunately, Learners (that is, Freshers) are in the National Assembly are not rightly positioned to cash in and out of the kinds of constituency projects Ogun West badly is in need of. Of course the one timers did their best but Ogun West needed more and still in need of more. It is going to be a different ball game now with a very experienced, established and well comnected Senator Adeola standing on the floor of the red chamber representing Ogun West Senatorial District.
Indeed, the good people of Ogun West Senatorial District are in for a good time in terms of quality representation at the Senate which they renewed their hope for, with their votes during the last general elections. Of course they have seen and experienced the taste of the good things to come during the electioneering campaign of Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola Yayi. He ran a campaign that was worlds apart from the usual.
Usually, campaign period is fo the making of promises by candidates aspiring for political positions but Senator Adeola wasn't just making promises, he was fulfilling them almost immediately. His campaign was developmental to the senatorial district as well as empowering to the people of Ogun West. His campaign was the first time a Senate candidate would visit all the 52 wards of Ogun West which he said he did to feel the people, their needs and concerns directly. He encouraged the submission of needs assessment from every ward. Some of these needs he met immediately. The ranking Legislator divided presented needs into two, those to be met immediately and those that would be met after the his inauguration into the 10th National Assembly as Ogun West Senator, He mandated the compilation of all needs into a document to serve as guide for him during his tenure of office.
Community that sought his assistance for the provision of electricity transformers were given, he gave directive for immediate building of blocks of classrooms to replace dilapidated ones in communities that called for help in that regard. He commenced repair of roads where it was demanded. He enlisted youths across Ogun West for his mega youths empowerment programmes that were running outside of the campaign that time to mention few. Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola Yayi openly launched his manifesto for the Senate seat and christened it My Covenant With Ogun Westerners..
The inauguration of the 10th Senate to the people of Ogun West is not only epoch making, it is a breath of fresh air that carries strong high hope of quality representation that will jump start accelerated development of Ogun West and uplift the lives of the constituents in many ways. Seat belts fastened, Ogun West is about to experience political representation like never before.
